Backstrap Woven Pieces
Backstrap weaving is an ancient textile tradition in which the loom is anchored to the weaver’s body, creating an intimate connection between maker and cloth. Woven entirely by hand, each textile carries subtle variations, rich texture, and the unmistakable beauty of human craftsmanship. These techniques have been passed down through generations, preserving cultural stories and artisanal knowledge in every piece.
Cotzal, Almolonga and Nahuala, Santiago Atitlan and San Juan La Laguna Guatemala are villages tucked into the highlands of central Guatemala, and home to some of the most talented Maya backstrap weavers in the country, as well as some of the most intricate designs. We are honored to be able to work with groups of women there and continue the weaving traditions of these villages.
